Why Philanthropic Studies?

I discovered this major just by chance, maybe some would call it fate. I had recently started to drive uber and had taken a trip which just so happened to be a philanthropic studies major heading to her internship site. I had switched between social work and education twice at this point and was struggling to find a place where I felt I belonged and fit what I really wanted to do with my life. I knew I needed to make an impact but I wasn't sure how or where! The college student gave me the info, I set up a meeting that week and next thing you know, I was now a philanthropic studies major too!

Learning Outcomes of Major

"It's about doing something that is bigger than just me, or my family. It is about doing something that I know can benefit the greater good and be proud of!"

What is it?

Per Payton and Moody Philanthropy is "Voluntary Action for the public good", but let's go further! Philanthropy can be what most people recognize it as: the millionaire donating to "charity", but it is so much more than that. It is that nonprofit organization who receives donations. It is also the family who donates to the church collection plate every Sunday, the person who donates clothes and serves dinner at the homeless shelter each year. It encompasses humanity, giving, receiving, civic engagement, volunteering, benevolence, collaboration, community and so much more! Without Philanthropy we wouldn't have the nonprofit sector.
